May Fair Report

Saturday, 14 May saw the opening of the 57th Rickmansworth week. For many of those years, Batchworth's May Fair has been the curtain raiser for a week packed with activity in the town and the Aquadrome, a week followed by the canal Festival, which attracts visitors from far and wide.

This year's festivities began with the usual parade from Joan of Arc school down the High Street, Church Street and Bury Lane to the Bury. Our Beavers joined in the parade, following the minibus and rib. Proceedings at the Bury were formally opened by our local MP, David Gauke after a brief introduction from Tony Berry of the Rickmansworth Society. We always leave the introductions to the Society to cut down on the formalities and to recognise our debt to them for bringing people into the Bury.

After the crowning of Miss Rickmansworth, the highlight of the afternoon was the regular tug-of-war between the local Cub Scout packs. Batchworth were not lucky enough to win that put up a splendid show. Martin and Marian Lantree that came back once again to run the event for us on the day.

The recent run of dry weather held for us and the tea and drinks tents once more did splendid business. We're very grateful to many parents and leaders, who gave up valuable time to organise the event for us, to set up, run it and clear up afterwards.
